Pan Am Railways - Tribute to a Fallen Flag
Pan Am was born as Guilford Transportation Systems in May 1981 initially buying the Maine Central and adding B&M in 1983 and D&H in 1984. Endured strike in 1987 as Guilford replaced MEC/B&M labor agreements with Springfield Terminal agreements. Guilford cast off D&H as bankrupt in 1988. In 2006 they became Pan Am Railways and partnered with Norfolk Southern to create Pan Am Southern LLC 50/50 partnership for lines west of Ayer, MA (except the Worcester Main).Pan Am was sold to CSX in 2022 and it's interesting to note that they never purchased a new locomotive in all of their 41 year existence, which, over the years, has resulted in an interesting variety of power.
Many thanks to John Barlow for the brief, concise history of Pan Am.
This gallery is devoted exclusively to Pan Am Railways. My Dad, Al Arnold, photographed the early days of Pan Am and it's many components and I have continued to shoot Pan Am right up to the present day. Given the purchase by CSX, I have pulled a sampling of Pan Am images from our archives as a visual tribute to another Fallen Flag. Enjoy!
